Political leaders driving global action to make every school safe to learn
Political leaders are championing a future where every child can learn free from violence.
At the Education World Forum in May 2025, Ministers and senior government representatives from Colombia, Germany, Malawi, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Tunisia, Uganda, the United Kingdom, Zambia, and Zimbabwe formed the Ministerial Taskforce to End Violence in and Around Schools.
Established by the UK Government in collaboration with Safe to Learn, the Taskforce unites governments committed to accelerating national action, raising visibility, and ensuring violence is no longer a barrier to children’s education. By endorsing a joint Ministerial Declaration during a roundtable at the Forum, these leaders committed to a range of actions, including:
- Embedding violence prevention and response into education sector policies, plans, and budgets
- Delivering on the pledges made at the 2024 Bogotá Ministerial Conference
- Enforcing bans on corporal punishment
- Strengthening reporting and data systems
- Supporting youth, survivor-led, and civil society efforts
They also pledged to advocate for wider endorsement of the Safe to Learn Call to Action, helping build a stronger global movement for safer, more inclusive learning environments. Taskforce members further agreed to champion the issue across global platforms, promote a unified narrative on violence prevention, share lessons on effective approaches, challenge harmful social and gender norms, and strengthen protection for children in emergencies and protracted crises.
The Ministerial Taskforce is helping to drive political action on safe learning. Their commitment is building the momentum needed to transform education systems so every child, everywhere, can learn in safety and free from violence.
