The impact of community violence on educational outcomes

This working paper presents a systematic literature review of evidence on how community violence affects children's educational outcomes, including academic achievement, school attendance, enrolment, and dropout. Drawing on 29 studies meeting inclusion criteria from an initial pool of 1,711 articles, the review finds clear short-term impacts of community violence on learning and attendance, particularly in high-violence contexts such as Latin America and the Caribbean. It highlights significant gaps in long-term evidence and calls for gender-sensitive, context-specific policy responses that address violence beyond school settings.
