Safe to learn
What do teachers think and do about violence in schools?
To help improve understanding of teachers' perspectives about violence in schools, UNESCO conducted a study under the Safe to Learn initiative, surveying around 35,000 teachers, 81 per cent of whom were from Latin America. This report examines teachers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding school violence — including physical, psychological, and sexual violence — and their use of corporal punishment. Key findings show that almost half of teachers received little or no pre-service training on school violence, and two-thirds manage it through experience alone. The report calls for systematic teacher training to create safe and non-violent learning environments.
